Assignment 4 - Writing about photographs

Prepare and deliver a 10-minute introduction to a piece of writing about a particular photographic image.
It is important to start with the writing and then move towards the image rather than choose an image and then find some writing on it (which will be more complicated). For this assignment you can work in pairs or individually.
The amount of writing about photography is an ever expanding field. It can seem daunting to begin with. This assignment is aimed at a joint venture both in terms of producing the material and in how we engage with it as a group.

The presentation should address the following:
  • The theoretical perspective.
  • Specific/ key language used.
  • An analysis of the photograph in visual terms.
  • The context, background or ‘back story’ to the image/essay.

Purpose?

  1. To learn from existing practice in documentary photography and how this has been analysed/ critically examined. Also to share knowledge/ discuss it with your peers.
Starting to understand the perspectives used by writers about photography and their choices will also help you to develop your own practice.

    IMPORTANT:
  • Make sure you illustrate your work
  • Talk should be put together in PowerPoint or similar
  • Remember to reach a conclusion
  • Avoid using the internet*, there are many good books/ journals on photography in the library - make use of them. *except for scholarly papers on Summon + Google scholar etc.
