Task 1 - Exploring The Frame


Framing an image is important and it has as much to do with what is inside the frame as it is to do with what is outside of it. The selection process for framing is crucial in any photograph and can be explored at a number of different levels – clarity, falsity, reduction, composition, abstraction, narrative, isolation. 

Task 1 centres on these issues and seeks the generation of practical results that can be used for demonstration/ discussion purposes.

  1. 1 -  Establish the aspect ratio of a DSLR camera. Consider this relationship between height and width.

    2 -  Produce a simple thin frame to the same ratio. The frame should be of such a size so that it can be held in front of a camera at arms length. Note; you will need to consider the focal length of the lens you will be using.

    3 - Produce a number of images that explore some of the options and demonstrate your considerations when framing.
